Police: Men in surveillance photos not connected to Henrico Food Lion shooting

Posted: Updated:

Henrico Police now say the men shown in a surveillance photo in connection with a grocery store shooting are not connected to the case.

The security guard wounded in the neck at the Food Lion on Mechanicsville Turnpike Monday night continues to recover.  Investigators say the men seen in a photo circulated by Henrico police were at the scene, but not involved in the shooting.

Now some regulars are torn between shopping at their neighborhood store.

Police say you can expect to see more officers in these Eastern Henrico neighborhoods after another shooting. Keisha Nicholson just found out about the crime. She says normally the security guards ease her nerves. "It makes me feel really good, really safe but I might reevaluate where I'm going next week," she said.

For other shoppers, it's not stopping them.

"I've been living out here 30 years so I don't have no problem coming out here," says Harold Davis.

This all happened just after 6 p.m. Monday night. No word yet if the shooter made it into the store, but police say he shot the guard in the neck outside the store. Police say the last time anyone saw the shooter, he was running towards Oak Hill Lane.

When you include the shooting at this Food Lion, there have been three shooting investigations in this area in less than four weeks. The other two cases are also still open. From the grocery store, another shooting happened last week on Hunters Mill Circle and a third incident at the end of June on Bolling Road. The cases are less than two miles apart, but police say the investigations are separate.

Meanwhile a Food Lion spokesperson released this statement, "We are working very closely with authorities as they investigate this unfortunate situation. Our thoughts are with the security guard for a speedy recovery."

A Food Lion spokesperson says the security guard works for an independent company and several stores have security guards, but would not release why those stores need security. A Food Lion spokesperson says another security guard is now working at the store.

Police have not yet released a description of the shooter. If you know anything that could help police, you're urged to call Crime Stoppers at 804-780-1000.
