Neighbors shocked after Richmond playground destroyed by fire

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

People who live near Overby-Sheppard Elementary School in Richmond can't believe what it looks like just two days after a fire destroyed it.

People who live in the area say they want someone to come forward for the sake of the kids who no longer have a place to play. Georgerone Mason, who lives across the street from the playground, takes his daughter there to play regularly because of the convenience. "I was so sad, I got teary eyed. I felt so bad for them," he said.

Investigators were back on the scene Monday going through the rubble trying to figure out an exact cause of the fire. Early estimates indicate there is $100,000 worth of damage here for a playground that's only been around two years.

Investigators are not calling this a case of arson just yet but they do want to talk to anyone with information.

"We really want to know what happened, to put some people's minds at ease and bring this to a close," Richmond Fire Department Capt. William Martin said.
