Amelia shooting victim's 4-year-old son: 'I lost my daddy'

A local family is pleading for answers after a young father is gunned down at a Fourth of July Party in Amelia County.

Family and friends plan to hold a vigil for 21-year-old De'aris Lewis Friday evening.

"They took a four-year-old's father away from him," said the victim's grandmother Gloria Evans. "He just turned 21. His life had just begun."

Evans can barely take listening to the cries of his little son.

"I lost my daddy," cries the little 4-year-old says Evans. "I lost my daddy. I can't find my daddy."

He is still too young to understand Daddy is never coming back.

"He said he's waiting for his daddy to come and get him so he can go home to watch the Lion King," said Evans. "That hurts me. It really hurts me."

The victim's mother says there are still more questions than answers.

"I'm just sad to know that someone took his life for nothing," said Aretha Lewis who says she was told her son got into an altercation at the party. "Over what? That's the only thing. We don't know what it was over."

NBC 12 was there as law enforcement searched for evidence in the field off Cheathams Road. Lewis says the annual Fourth of July field party has become infamous over the years.

"I just wish there was something they could do about those guys having that party because this is ridiculous," said Lewis. "Something like this should have never happened."

A candlelight vigil is scheduled for Friday evening at 7PM at Beamer Field in Crewe, Virginia. The field is next to the Dollar General store.

Police are asking anyone with information on this crime to call Crime Solvers at 804-561-5200.
