The inside scoop on auditioning for American Idol

The American Idol Audition bus rolls into Richmond next week, and thousands of Central Virginians are expected to make an attempt at becoming a star. If you are one of them, here's what you need to know to make it to the next round.

The first thing to know is that you won't be alone.

"I'm expecting a very long wait with a lot of people," said Daniel Speed, who plans to audition. "[They will] probably be singing the same exact songs."

Daniel will be there Tuesday, ready for his shot at fame. Speed belts out a pretty impressive rendition of Adele's "Rolling in the Deep".

Speed is prepared, and even more importantly, he is confident.

"I am expecting to make it through," he said. "Because that is pretty much how I feel right now."

That confidence will be important, according to a man who would know: Patrick Lynn, a senior producer for American Idol.

"Leave your nerves at home!" said Lynn.

Lynn says at this level, the producers will be in search of people who are ready for the big time, and the more comfortable you are in that intense setting, the better your chances of moving on.

"Relax, smile and do your best, and leave the nerves somewhere else," Lynn said.

Talent agent Lee Moore from the Richmond-based East Coast Entertainment agrees. He tells his clients to stick to their strongest material and avoid something new.

"Do what you do best. Be personable, smile, be comfortable," he said before adding, "don't freak out."

Even though the chances are slim of becoming the next Eliot Yamin, Richmond's most famous American Idol, Moore said going through the audition process can still lead to big things.

"It is a conduit to a better place."

A place thousands, including Daniel Speed, will hope to get to by starting right here in Richmond.

The American Idol Audition Bus rolls in front of the State Capitol on Tuesday morning. It will be in place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
