NBC 12 Investigation: Widow wants answers after husband overdoses in Henrico Jail

Questions surround the death of an inmate at the Henrico County Jail. Willie Scott died from a drug overdose. The family now has an attorney who wants to know how the drugs got inside the jail, and if the jail is doing enough to keep inmates and staff safe.

"It's awful," said widow Latrice Scott. "I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy."

Scott spoke to NBC 12 with her attorney at her side. She became a widow three weeks after marrying Willie Scott in the Henrico Jail.

"I push, push, and push," said Scott. "I still end up in the same place. No one deserves to have to go through this."

Scott overdosed on fentanyl. The CDC says the drug is 80 times as potent as morphine.

"He was an adult. He made the decision," we noted.

"It was a bad decision," acknowledged Scott. "But it shouldn't have been there."

Scott is convinced her husband's death could have been avoided. We asked Sheriff Mike Wade if staff is searched each day.

"No," replied Sheriff Mike Wade. "They leave all their property in their lockers. You have to put trust in those people."

"Do you believe someone broke that trust?" we asked Sheriff Wade.

"Absolutely," replied Sheriff Wade. "Somebody broke that trust."

"Staff?" we asked.

"Realize it's not one of the deputies who broke that trust," replied Sheriff Wade.

Sheriff Wade believes a contracted worker took money to sneak drugs into the jail.

"I think that the public trust has been broken," said Scott's attorney Chris Winslow. "I think that  a review should be conducted from top to bottom of procedures with regard to screening and security."

The sheriff says this is the first drug overdose he has had on his watch in the past 15 years. He would not rule out possible arrests.
