Varina neighborhood plans to fight Family Dollar store plans

Posted: Updated:

An Eastern Henrico neighborhood is growing, but people living in Varina say they're against plans for a major retailer to set up shop.  Developers want to build a Family Dollar just feet away from a number of new homes on New Market Road right next to the North James Estates.

Neighbors reached out to NBC12 over concerns about what the store will bring to the community.  They say they are not against development, but they don't want a Family Dollar so close by.  They say they will fight this project.

New Market Road is a well traveled stretch through Henrico County, but the area still keeps a rural charm.  This is why families like the Murrays and Allens say they moved here.  But these neighbors tell NBC12 the plan to build a Family Dollar store, steps from their backyards, will change the area in a negative way.

"They target low-income communities. We are definitely not that and it's not okay," Angela Allen said.  "A quarter of a million dollar home and a Family Dollar do not go hand in hand."

The families have taken it upon themselves to notify surrounding neighborhoods of the plan. According to county records, there will be architectural changes to make sure the new Family Dollar doesn't look like a typical store, but neighbors say that doesn't matter.

"One, it's going to affect the property values. It brings on extra traffic that we weren't planning for," Monica Murray said.  There are six Family Dollar stores close by in the city and other parts of eastern Henrico; the closest is three miles away on Williamsburg Road.

Henrico's planning department confirms there are plans for one more Family Dollar and two other Dollar General stores for eastern Henrico.

"We do not want it here and we will fight tooth and nail to make sure it does not come into our neighborhood," Clifton Murray said.

For now, the plans for the New Market Road store are still working its way through the planning department.  The developer, Twin Rivers Capital, refused to comment on this story.

The North James Estates neighborhood is planning to hold a community meeting to address concerns Tuesday, July 8 at 6:45 p.m. in the Varina Public Library on Library Road.
