Storms threaten to change up RVA firework shows

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

The threat of rain is already causing Fourth of July celebration changes. Organizers say  RVA Fireworks on the James will now be Saturday evening, instead of Thursday night. Other holiday events around RVA are so far still on as planned, unless the forecast gets even more grim.

"It was an easy decision (to push back RVA Fireworks on the James), because at the end of the day, the safety and comfort of the spectators on Brown's Island is our primary consideration," said Andy Poarch, a spokesperson for Venture Richmond.

Unfortunately, all the entertainment and music planned for before Thursday's festivities won't be rescheduled to Saturday.

"We still have all of the food trucks," added Poarch.

The fireworks start when it gets dark around 9:15 p.m.. However, the food trucks will be ready as early as 6 p.m. in the evening around Brown's Island.

Other big firework displays are still on schedule, like the Genworth Financial 31st Annual Celebrate Freedom Independence Day Concert at its headquarters in Henrico. The fireworks displays planned at the Squirrels Diamond on Friday and Saturday night are still ready to go.

However, regardless of where you watch the sky light up, the Fourth of July is a celebration that isn't just about one show of glitter and patriotism.

"The Fourth of July is kind of a whole weekend experience anyway, so I don't think (rescheduling of fireworks) will deter from any of the excitement and entertainment," said Bill Leach, who plans to watch the show on Brown's Island.
