Virginia prepares as Tropical Storm Arthur draws near

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

The Virginia Department of Emergency Management is taking no chances, using most of the state's resources to monitoring Tropical Storm Arthur.

Officials are identifying shelters on the local and state level, including shelters for pets and those with disabilities. Universities, like VCU, are usually considered overflow shelters for the state.

A plan is in place to evacuate the Hampton Roads region, though officials do not expect to use it. Designated evacuation routes are in place, with an option for lane reversal on Interstate 64 between Hampton Roads and the Richmond area.

"That is a decision the governor would have to make to reverse the lanes," said Dawn Eischen with VDEM. "We don't anticipate that with this storm, but we do have that plan in place should we have a major hurricane, and those are normally category three or above."

The Richmond-area is not expected to take a direct hit from the storm, but it's always a good idea to check your supplies of batteries, flashlights and non-perishable foods.

The Ready Virginia app has a checklist of preparation supplies.
