Richmond police will demonstrate bike theft prevention tips Thursday

Richmond police are hoping to put the brakes on a growing trend of bike thefts in the city. The public is invited to a presentation Thursday morning where police will demonstrate just how easily bicycles can be stolen.

Third Precinct Lt. Erlan Marshall, whose sector includes the Fan neighborhood--an area where bikes were the most-stolen item in 2013--will provide tips on bicycle securing and theft prevention. The presentation will be in Carytown at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, at the intersection of West Cary and Sheppard streets.

Joining Lt. Marshall will be the city's Pedestrian, Bicycle and Trails Coordinator, Jakob Helmboldt, and the Bike Walk RVA Coordinator for Sports Backers, Brantley Tyndall. They will provide details on the city's continued advancement in making Richmond a great place to bike, including an updated report on the installation of the new bike racks throughout town.

Richmond police reported that 195 bikes have been stolen in the city so far this year.
