Joint replacement is not easy. It requires an extensive surgery, which if not done correctly, can make the problem worse. But doctors are using a technology that's almost like science fiction.
They are employing robots that help take a 3D image of the patient's body and they craft the perfect replacement joint. Orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Michael Wind of Chippenham and Johnston Willis Hospitals, explains the robot actually helps in the surgical procedure to make sure it's done perfectly.
"Every patient is different and our goal with this is to customize the surgery to that patient. The robot is actually assisting us. So the surgeon is actually driving the procedure, but the robot is going to make sure we stay to the pre-operative plan that is customized to that patient."
Chippenham Hospital is currently the only surgery center in Central Virginia that offers this groundbreaking technology.
