HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

A man charged in a crash that killed a Varina nurse has a history of violence and drugs, prosecutors said in court on Wednesday.

A judge denied bond for Jimmy Green Jr., in part because of his prior criminal history, which include charges tied to "violence, alcohol and substance abuse, in Florida, South Carolina and Indiana, prosecutors said in court.

Prosecutors also hinted alcohol and other substances could have played a role in this crash, but said the investigation was still ongoing.

Green is accused of driving the car involved in the crash which killed Melissa Haislip, as she was on her way home from work at St. Mary's Hospital in Henrico on June 18. Green's car was heading north on Old Osborne Turnpike around a turn, when it crossed into oncoming traffic and struck Haislip's, according to police.

Green broke his leg in the crash and appeared in court in a wheelchair. Green will be back in court on July 9.
