Richmond woman battles city after half her home is demolished

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

A Richmond woman is battling the city after she says officials tore down part of her house, without telling her. The city condemned the Church Hill home, and demolished part of it, last week. The new owner, Shahida Sohail, says she, and the former owners, were never given a proper demolition notice.

City officials say they did send a formal letter to the previous owners. However, since the property changed hands so close to the demolition date, the city's system didn't update in time to also send Sohail a notice. City administrators also say the responsibility is upon the parties involved in the house sale to release all paperwork on the property.

"I feel bad for the property owner. But there was sort of a confluence of events that really created a problem that we could not foresee. And, therefore I don't believe we did anything that was to the detriment of the property owner," said John Walsh, operations manager at Richmond City.

"I don't care who is going to fix my damage. I need my life back. That's all," said Sohail.

It's not certain who will ultimately pay for the demolition work, which is more than $15,000. Usually, the owner pays for the demolition. It's likely that this situation will have to be resolved in court.
