RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A U.S. senator from Iowa is demanding answers tonight from the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority, because of a series of investigations by NBC12.
Iowa Sen. Charles Grassley is questioning the agency's control over taxpayer dollars. Much of the RRHA's money comes from the federal government,
Grassley wrote two letters, one to RRHA CEO Adrienne Goolsby and a second to the secretary of Housing and Urban Development.
The ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Grassley is asking RRHA to turn over its records. In his letter, he cites several stories from NBC12 and reports from another media outlet, including a story about RRHA busing residents to a West Virginia casino using taxpayer money. Grassley also cites an NBC12 story questioning whether the agency's legal counsel has a valid law license in Virginia.
Grassley is asking for a range of documents from RRHA and HUD.
A statement sent Tuesday by RRHA acknowledges they received Grassley's letter, and the agency is in the process of reviewing the letter and will respond accordingly.
