Ex-Overton standout Betts picked for Futures Game

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Former Overton High baseball standout Mookie Betts has been selected to play in the 2014 All-Star Futures game, Major League Baseball announced Tuesday.

Betts, the No. 51 prospect in Minor League Baseball has split time between Double-A and Triple-A this season.

Betts began his professional career as a shortstop, but soon shifted to second base. This season he has been splitting time between second base and center field.

The fifth-round pick in 2011 is hitting .346 this season with eight home runs and 28 stolen bases. In 2013, he was one of a handful of minor league players with at least 15 home runs and 30 stolen bases.

The Futures Game will be played Sunday, July 13, at Target Field in Minneapolis, the site of the Major League All-Star game two days later.
