House of Delegates to consider governor vetoes today

Posted: Updated:
Richmond (WSLS) - The House of Delegates will be back in Richmond today for a special session.

It will focus on several vetoes from Governor Terry McAuliffe in the budget, including an amendment requiring Medicaid expansion be approved by the General Assembly.

During a news conference Friday, McAuliffe vowed to expand Medicaid with the help of the federal government and non-profits, bypassing the legislative body.

The General Assembly can override the vetoes, although it would require a two-thirds majority from both houses.

While Republicans have enough votes to do so in the House, they hold a slim majority in the Senate (20-19).

In all, the governor vetoed seven line items.

House Republicans say they will consider all action, including legal, in response to the vetoes.

The House meets today at 5 p.m.
