HANOVER, VA (WWBT) -

A new grocery store that could bring nearly 100 jobs to Hanover received the green light from the county's Planning Commission.

The commission recommended approval to rezone the property on Sliding Hill Road, leading many in the area to wonder if a Walmart is coming.

Right now the area is just a field of bush and some in Hanover community say they have enough options and there is no need for anything more. The field sits just a few feet away from a Food Lion.
"Food Lion serves all of our purposes we have the Sheetz on the corner for gas," said Stephanie Welles visits the store almost very day. She says the thought of another store in the area is suffocating. "This corridor up here has a lot of traffic, since they put the FedEx building here. They have plans to expand the road but we haven't seen that happen but it is just going to create more congestion."

The plans call for a grocery store, pharmacy, and gas station on site. The store is expected to be about 42,000 square feet. Plans filed in the Planing Department bear a striking resembles to those of a Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market being proposed in Henrico.

"I think we are fine. I don't think we need an additional Wal-Mart," said Hanover resident Sheila Bentley. "I've got a Wal- Mart going north and I've got a Wal-Mart going south and they are both about ten minutes from each other."

Walmart says there are no plans to announce a new store in Hanover at this time. The developer won't say which store is considering a move.

Now that the county Planning Commission has recommended that approval, public comment is the next step. There is no word yet on when those public forums will be held.
