Thieves target lawnmowers, weed whackers in Richmond

Lawnmowers and other yard equipment are disappearing from sheds and garages across Richmond.

Police say several of these thefts happened in just the past few days in the Church Hill area, the Fan and other neighborhoods.

"There's not a lot of crime in the neighborhood but we see this sort of thing this time of year," said Ames Russell, President of the Tuckahoe Terrace Civic Association.

He says his neighbor's shed was broken into over the weekend and a mountain bike and lawnmower were taken.

So, Russell used the NextDoor app, a social network connecting neighbors, to alert his other neighbors. Then, someone else came forward saying her lawnmower was stolen over the same time frame.

Also over the weekend, another bicycle and lawnmower were stolen in the 1900 block of Albany Avenue. Police say, thieves are targeting this equipment, because of the fast cash.

"People have been targeting people's backyards, sheds, stealing lawnmowers, weed eaters," said Marquita Wilson, who lives across the street from where the theft happened.

In the first precinct, where Wilson lives, police say there have been six lawnmowers thefts in the last month.

"We really need to send a message out to these thieves that's inappropriate for them to be coming into our yards," said Wilson.

It is that time of year where people are using lawn equipment, so to avoid being a victim yourself lock your sheds and garages and keep exterior lights on. If you are victim, call police.
