Fort Lee gate closures announced for Slam Shut exercise

Posted: Updated:
FORT LEE, VA (WWBT) -

Starting Saturday and continuing through June 30, a series of brief gate closures are planned at Fort Lee to test a part of the installation's crisis response plan.

Director of Emergency Services Tony Dewitt said Exercise Slam Shut will test the proficiency of post security guards in closing the gates during emergencies such as a robbery, active shooter incident or bomb threat.

"There are processes and procedures they must follow to secure the installation quickly and safely," Dewitt said. "This validation has become more crucial with the recent active shooter events at the Naval Station Norfolk, Fort Hood and the Washington Navy Yard, as well as the stabbing case at the Navy facility in Portsmouth. We're pretty sure community members would agree that the importance of this type of exercise outweighs any momentary inconveniences that those accessing the installation may experience."

Each security guard shift will participate in the training and some gates will be affected more than once because of their hours of operation, Dewitt said. A Fort Lee spokesperson said the Department of Emergency Services wants everyone in the community to be aware of the exercise schedule and to plan accordingly. The gate closures should last no more than 10 minutes.

Gate closings will happen at the following times:

  • Saturday, June 21: Sisisky Gate – 10:30 a.m., 2 and 9 p.m.
  • Sunday, June 22: A Avenue Gate – 10:30 a.m.
  • Monday, June 23: Temple Gate – 10:30 a.m.

  • Wednesday, June 25: Lee Gate – 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
  • Thursday, June 26: A Avenue Gate – 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
  • Friday, June 27: Mahone Gate – 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

  • Monday, June 30: Sisisky Gate will be exercised and closed at 9 p.m.

Any motorists who are stopped at the gate during the closures are asked to remain in their vehicle and avoid actions that would pose a hazard to themselves or others such as making sudden u-turns or pulling out of a turn lane to proceed to a different access point.

"We care about the safety of our community," Dewitt said, "and we appreciate everyone's patience and understanding during this important exercise."
