HAZMAT patient still in critical condition

Posted: Updated:

The Chesterfield County Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded Saturday afternoon, June 14, at 2:42 p.m. to 561 Coalbrook Drive for the report of a chemical smell inside a home.

Fire crews arrived to find two adults outside the home experiencing some minor medical symptoms. The occupants stated that one juvenile was still inside the home. Fire crews made entry and rescued one juvenile from the home. All three persons were transported to VCU Medical Center and the juvenile remains in critical condition.

HAZMAT crews and investigators determined that two chemicals had been intentionally mixed together causing a chemical reaction that produced a toxic gas causing the injuries to those transported. The names of the chemicals will not be released so that this event cannot be recreated by others in the future.
