Posted: Updated:

A Dinwiddie sheriff's deputy was injured Saturday while making a traffic stop on Interstate 85.

The sheriff's department said the deputy, who was not named, suffered injuries when the man he had pulled over for a traffic violation Saturday around 6:15 p.m. ran over the deputy's foot as he drove off after receiving his traffic summons.

William Joyner Jr., 48, of the 18000 block of Kilmer Lane in Triangle, Va., was later arrested and charged with assault on a law enforcement officer, reckless driving and resisting arrest. Authorities said the injured deputy was taken to Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg, where he was treated and released.

Joyner is being held without bond in Meherrin River Regional Jail while awaiting arraignment in Dinwiddie County Regional Court.
