New free bus offers service from Carytown to Bottom

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

A new free service to curb drunk driving and connect the city starts this weekend. Organizers hope The Hop RVA bus route will do a lot for Richmond.

The name appears to be fitting.

Its easy to hop on and hop off, explained Marketing Coordinator Heather Dixon. You can literally hop around RVA from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m.

The new service is about more than fun. Organizers and restaurant owners tell us they needed to fill the void in Richmond's nightlife that opened when the "To the Bottom and Back" bus stopped operating. There is a larger goal than simply connecting the city.

Starlite General Manager Shannon Conway says The Hop RVA is also about her customers' safety.

I think people do maybe have sometimes a little too much to drink and they tend to overestimate their ability to get just to downtown or just back up here, she said. It offers us a lot of peace of mind knowing that our customers can safely enjoy what were offering.

The bus will start at the Kroger in Carytown and then head east down Cary Street.  Some of the hot spots in Shockoe Slip and Shockoe Bottom are also on the list. Then the bus will turn around at the 17th Street Farmers Market and head west. It will make stops at bars and restaurants on West Main Street in The Fan, before heading back to Carytown.

Napoleon Taxi and Nightlife Virginia are the brains behind The Hop RVA, but it's supported by the public through contributions online and businesses that buy sponsorships.

Its a responsible means of transportation, Dixon added.

Starting out, The Hop RVA will operate Friday and Saturday nights from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. They're hoping to have three buses with two routes by the end of summer.
