Elevated bacteria levels found in Henrico, Prince William milk - NBC12 - WWBT - Richmond, VA News On Your Side

Milk scare includes schools, hospital

Preliminary lab tests of milk distributed to Henrico schools show elevated levels of bacteria, according to Virginia state health officials.

The milk from Newport News based Marva Maid Dairy tested positive for coliform bacteria, causing the milk to spoil. The lab results were revealed by Chief Deputy Commissioner for Public Health and Preparedness Dr. David H. Trump Tuesday afternoon.

"We are not sure of the cause yet, and we are investigating whether transportation issues of the milk could be to blame," said Trump in a press call Tuesday. "We are also going through the plant's records, and looking at how the milk was stored."

Students in Henrico and Prince William schools reported feeling ill from the milk, but Trump said no widespread illness now exists in either county.

The Health Department confirms a hospital also reported having bad milk.

"We did not release info about the hospital," said Trump. "It was a report of spoiled milk only. No one was reported ill."

Henrico Schools have switched to an alternate milk provider.

"Is it fair to say that you are going to stick with this alternate provider for the rest of the school year?" we asked Andy Jenks with Henrico Schools.

"It is starting to look that way," said Jenks. "We have graduations next week, and that is it."

Marva Maid also provides milk for Richmond City Schools.

"As of today, we are still using the same provider," said Cletisha Lovelace with RPS. "We have been working closely with the health department and will continue to take the necessary action as a result of this ongoing investigation."

Lovelace promised an update Wednesday morning.

Health officials ask people to not consume Marva Maid milk in cartons with expiration dates between May 30 and June 2. According to Julie Henderson, Director of Food and General Environmental Services, Marva Maid will not face a fine.
