RPD: Barber dealt drugs, stylist injured girl

A Richmond barbershop owner is behind bars, accused of using his shop to sell heroin.

Tony Dunaway, 45, faces a host of drug charges after search warrants show a confidential informant bought heroin from the barber shop owner several times.

Investigators are checking to see if the stylists were even licensed after one of them allegedly injured a young girl.

Debra Burrows says she took her 13-year-old granddaughter to Yonnie's Barber Shop on Government Road. Burrows says a stylist there injured her granddaughter by placing a hair weave cap too far down on her head.

"As it gets tighter, it's not supposed to go into the skin. It would loosen up with the hair," she said. "This is just a child and you can't allow things like this to go on."

Burrows said she confronted Dunaway about that stylist.

"He told me she didn't have her license," Burrows said.

Lt. Dan Minton with Richmond Police says the barber shop is under further investigation to see if the stylists had their licenses. However, the investigation began with complaints not about hair, but drugs. According to a search warrant, police used an informant to buy heroin from Dunaway in a back room of the barber shop three times.

Richmond police said focusing on the barber shop is part of a larger effort to clean up the Great Fulton area. In February, next door, a 7-year-old was shot outside of Fine Food Convenience Store.

"People thought that maybe the drug dealing in the area may be tied to that, and so we started taking a look at the barber shop," said Minton.

Richmond police don't believe what allegedly happened at the barber shop has anything to do with that February triple-shooting, but investigators say they want to stop the violence before it escalates.

Dunaway faces charges of heroin possession with the intent to distribute. He has been denied bond, so he'll remain in jail until his court date July 16.
