One person dead from injuries sustained in Chester house fire

CHESTER, VA (WWBT) - One person died from injuries sustained in a fire that broke out early Sunday morning at a home in Chester.

In addition, fire investigators traced the cause of the fire to a flower pot on the front porch that contained smoking materials. The fire then spread up the side of the home, causing significant damage.

Around 2:15 a.m. Sunday, firefighters responded to call in the 4100 block of Hamlin Court. When crews arrived, they saw heavy smoke and fire coming from both sides of the house.

Six people were inside the home, including two children. Five occupants were able to get out on their own. One person jumped from a second story window. Crews rushed five people to VCU Medical Center.
