Community and Petersburg Police team up to combat crime

Posted: Updated:
PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) -

Petersburg citizens and police officers came together for one common goal on Saturday. That mission is to rid the streets of Petersburg of violent criminals aimed at making life difficult for people in the community.

Rasheeda Farid has lived in Petersburg all of her life. She says this police and community meeting is the right step towards reducing crime.

Farid said, "We have to let criminals know that this is not a place that you can come and set up shop."

In 2014 there have been six murders in Petersburg. Four murders took place all at one time on Harding Street. Another murder was also on that same street one day after the four others were laid to rest.

Dolores Smith heads up the Harding Street Neighborhood Association.

"The main thing is to get the community out to be involved because the only way you are going to solve it, is together we stand," Smith said.

Dozens of police officers and over 50 members of the community made that stand on Saturday.

Police are hoping this bond will forge a lasting relationship with concerned citizens who can ultimately be the eyes and ears when the police are not around.

"The police can not be on every corner so it takes the community as one to be able to address those issues," Police chief John Dixon said.

Police broke into groups with citizens brain storming for hours on ways to cut down crime. For Dolores Smith a resolution can not come soon enough. She says her community has seen the worst in recent times.

The meeting is a launch pad so that they can move forward, making way for a better tomorrow.

"I am hoping from today that this will encourage people to say I am not going to let this happen anymore," Smith said.

This is the first of more Police and Community workshop meetings to come in Petersburg. Police say overall statistics show that in a seven year period crime is on a downward trend in Petersburg.
