HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

She lost her life after running a half marathon in March. Now, the family of Henrico teenager Cameron Gallagher will announce an upcoming 5k race, in her honor.

The announcement will be coupled with a party for all to attend on Brown's Island Saturday, from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. In an interview, Gallagher's father says it's now his turn to finish what Cameron started.

"Take the grief, and try to turn it into a positive," said David Gallagher. "Cameron would have done that. That's what she did her whole life."

Gallagher said his 16-year-old daughter loved life and her family, but found herself fighting feelings of depression. They were feelings she would not let win.

"Right before she died, she made a plan to create a 5k race, to raise awareness for teenage depression, and try to reverse that negative stigma," Gallagher said.

Cameron believed people searching for happiness needed to be embraced, not isolated at school, or cast away from friends. Family members say the goal of the Brown's Island party is to bring people together, and carry on her philosophy.

Between 5,000 and 10,000 people are expected to run the race this September. Details of the location will be announced at Saturday's block party, with runners able to register on the same day.

"We have been so inspired by the community, and more importantly Cameron's message," Gallagher said.
