(RNN) - Singer Bret Michaels canceled his show and is receiving treatment after a medical emergency Thursday.

Michaels' guitarist Pete Evick posted a note on his Facebook page saying Michaels "had me sing a song as he rushed off stage" during a concert in Manchester, NH. "One of the crew returned instantly to notify me that Bret's blood sugar was extremely low."

Michaels returned long enough to tell the crowd that he could not continue the show.

He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as a child and has used his platform to raise money for diabetes research.

"He is a health fanatic and fiercely monitors his blood sugar, he basically had to be dragged off the stage in his sickest of conditions," Evick wrote.

Evick said Michaels was being evaluated by paramedics and promised updates.

Michaels rose to fame as the lead singer of ‘80s hair band Poison. He's since appeared on Celebrity Apprentice, which he won, and All Star Celebrity Apprentice.

Michaels has battled a number of health issues in addition to diabetes. In 2010, he underwent an emergency appendectomy, then survived a massive brain hemorrhage, followed shortly by a stroke.
