HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - The Henrico woman killed in a traffic accident on Parham Road Wednesday night is being remembered for her many years of service to the Tuckahoe Volunteer Rescue Squad.
Beverly Luther had been a volunteer for more than 16 years, and served as the dispatcher for the rescue squad's Wednesday Daytime Crew.
A press release from the rescue squad said Luther, 86, had described her coworkers as her family. "These people saved my life by giving it purpose," the release quoted her as saying.
Tuckahoe Rescue Squad President John Tatum said, "Ms. Luther was the heart of the Wednesday crew. We were grateful to have such a dedicated volunteer who gave her time so graciously. Our people who volunteer their time are our most valuable resource and we have lost one of our family members. Our Rescue Squad mourns the loss of a wonderful person."
Luther died Wednesday when her car collided head-on with another car at Parham and Midway roads. Luther was pronounced dead at the scene, and the unidentified driver of the other car was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, authorities said. Lanes on Parham were shut down for about four hours. Police said neither alcohol nor speed appear to be factors in the crash.
