Federal judge dismisses suit against Richmond Sheriff

A federal judge dismissed a lawsuit by a former Richmond City Jail employee against Sheriff C.T. Woody.

Lt. Yuvonka Lewis worked at the jail for about six years, and claimed she suffered from discrimination and sexual harassment, eventually leading to an unfair termination. Lewis claimed she was let go because the Sheriff believed she leaked information about nepotism claims to the media.

However, Sheriff Woody denied all the allegations contained in the EEOC complaint and U.S. District Court Judge John Gibney dismissed the lawsuit. Gibney ruled Lewis did not engage in protected speech and that Sheriff Woody did not publicize any harmful information about Lewis.

"I have faith in our judicial system. To protect the integrity of the process, I never wanted to litigate these matters in public. However, these matters have now been concluded and I am extremely satisfied that the process worked," said Sheriff Woody. "The EEOC dismissed her baseless allegations in 2012 and now the federal court has dismissed her baseless allegations in 2014. I hope that we can all begin to move forward now and put these matters behind us. The community is relying upon me and my entire agency to continue our transition process."
