Chesterfield police looking for suspects tied to multiple cigarette larcenies

Chesterfield police have released new surveillance pictures that capture the moments several suspects steal thousands of dollars worth of cigarettes.

Investigators are looking for at least four suspects who, they say, are tied to several cigarette larcenies throughout the county. Chesterfield police are also speaking with other jurisdictions who are reporting an uptick in stolen cigarettes.

Police say that each crime is the same: the suspect or suspects walk into either a convenience or grocery store and then walk out with cartons of Newport cigarettes!

"They're going into the convenience stores, they're walking around for a few minutes, trying to remain in the background, trying to remain anonymous and then stuffing cartons of cigarettes into jackets or shirts and walking right out of the stores," said Detective Chris Rizzuti with Chesterfield police.

Police believe the suspects have stolen more than thirty cartons of cigarettes totaling nearly $1,500 to turn around and resell them.

"They're reselling these cigarettes on the street," said Det. Rizzuti. "They're not doing this in stores or anything like that. We see them going up north a lot, where the taxes are much higher. That's not to say that's what happened here but we're looking into that."

Since February, police say the suspects have robbed at least seven stores and they're speaking to other jurisdictions including Hanover and Richmond.

"This may be occurring in Richmond, they've had some issues as well," said Det. Rizzuti. "We want to avoid it becoming a big problem where more dangerous crimes may come into the area."
