How safe is it to cross the street in the Richmond metro? You may be surprised to learn a new national survey says this area is among the most dangerous for pedestrians in the country.

The Richmond-metro region ranked the 19th most dangerous region for pedestrians out of the country's 51 largest metropolitan areas.

"People just walk out in the street like crazy...like mad men down here," said Richmond native Mandy Blankenship.

The report cautions one of the biggest issues is access to crosswalks. They even scrutinize how much time you have to cross the street. Officials suggest 10 seconds is not sufficient for the elderly or disabled.

"This is a real issue," said James Corless with Transportation for America. "167 deaths in the last decade...just in Richmond alone. We should be putting in what we call complete streets...crosswalks, sidewalks…slowing down the speed of traffic."

The Washington region ranks 35th on the list. The Hampton Roads area is 36th.
