New counsel appointed for Cobb's accused murderer

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

The 16-year-old accused of killing Marty Cobb and sexually assaulting his sister appeared in court Tuesday for a status hearing. Mairese Washington was appointed a new attorney at the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.

The change comes about because of some sort of conflict within the pubic defenders' office, which means no one from that office could take the case. Because of a gag order issued by the judge, however, it has been very difficult for us to get you information. No one was able to tell us what that conflict may have been.

Washington's family was in court Tuesday but did not want to comment for our cameras. We could hear one member telling the teen's mother to calm down as she approached us.

Washington is charged with murder and strangulation after the May 1 tragedy. Cobb was beaten to death while trying to protect his sister from a sexual assault near the railroad tracks behind their south side home. Sources say that little girl is not allowed to return home to her family.

Also Tuesday, the judge set a date for the next hearing. A preliminary hearing is now scheduled for June 9.
