New angle parking spaces causes confusion in downtown Richmond

Posted: Updated:

It's called "Back up Angle Parking" and it is all part of the 10th Street conversion from a one way street to a two way.

Geraldine Lee is not a fan of the angle parking. Like others, she's confused about how to actually get into the spaces.

"I had to struggle to get into it because sometimes its hard backing up."

It's either back up, or don't use the space at all. If you are parked the wrong way you will get a ticket. At first glance it might see a little difficult but what you have to do is actually back into these parking spaces at an angle.

Developers tell us today that this type of design means more parking for downtown Richmond.

"We increase parking by 50% and its been proven to operate safely by backing in allowing the driver to see traffic as he pulls out.," City Engineer Thomas Flynn said.

Pulling in might be another matter as we saw Tuesday, this maneuver requires traffic behind you to stop. But Thomas says since this started about a month ago, there haven't been any accidents.

Rick Rickman was surprised to find the new spaces. He says they're a good solution to the parking in down town Richmond.

"I think its a bonus, it makes it easier to come downtown which is huge for me because I'm down here every couple of weeks."
