Judge denies request to dismiss charges against McDonnells

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A judge denied a defense motion to dismiss charges against former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell and his wife Maureen.

U.S. District Judge James Spencer heard nearly two hours of arguments in Richmond federal court Monday, centering on whether to dismiss several of the charges facing the former first couple.

The judge failed to show a joint trial "will result in a miscarriage of justice or prevent Robert McDonnell from receiving a fair trial."

McDonnell and his wife face more than a dozen charges for accepting more than $165,000 from former Star Scientific CEO Jonnie Williams in exchange for help promoting the company's products.

The McDonnells deny any wrongdoing. They are scheduled to go on trial July 28.
