HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

Virginia State Police say a citizen tip led them to a wanted sex offender Monday afternoon.

Thomas Herbert Ward, 40, was arrested in the West End community of Millspring Towne for a probation violation and failing to register at a new address.

State police say Ward had been wanted on a felony probation violation but they couldn't find him at his listed Richmond address.

According to state police, 90 percent of the time investigators rely on tips from the public to find missing/wanted sex offenders.

Our cameras were rolling moments after state troopers took Ward into custody. Police say, they were lead to a townhome on Millwheel Lane after receiving an anonymous electronic tip that said Ward was living here.

James Jackson lives nearby and was watching as state police surrounded the home.

"First, I saw one guy pull out his gun and run down the alley," he said. "Then more came, then more came, then the van came. They put on all the gear then got behind the van and said over the loudspeaker, 'You got ten minutes to come out.'"

According to police, Ward barricaded himself inside and finally surrendered to police after two and a half hours. Ward had self-inflicted wounds to his hands and wrists but authorities said he will be OK.

Currently, there are 285 sex offender wanted for various offenses in Virginia. Ward was on the list at the time the anonymous citizen notified police.

Ward was convicted of sodomizing a minor back in 2011. Police won't tell us what the probation violation was, except that it was a serious felony.
