On Your Side: Powhatan grandparents robbed of thousands

Posted: Updated:
POWHATAN, VA (WWBT) -

A Powhatan couple got emotionally wrapped up in getting their granddaughter out of trouble,, but by the time they realized the caller was "not" their grand child, their money was gone.

Many people got wise to scams instructing them to "wire" money.  Now, those Green Dot MoneyPak cards should also trigger an alarm.

That's how thieves got paid $6,500 in one of three  "grandparents" scams going around in the Moseley community.

Marian Upton got a frantic call from someone she believed was her granddaughter.
"She was so hysterical, pleading, "Grandma, please help me!'" Upton said.

Upton put down the phone and rushed to tell her husband their granddaughter crashed a rental car after attending a wedding in California and got arrested for DUI. Two scammers robbed the grandparents over two days by phone.
