Students' artwork requested to fill Hallway of Hope in Henrico

Children's artwork usually brings smiles to many faces, which is why there is a hallway filled with their work inside Henrico Doctors' Hospital.

Now, patients want to see even more of the colorful masterpieces.

Patricia Dodd gets a kick out of all of the pictures that line this hallway at Henrico Doctors' Hospital.

Dodd is in this hospital quite a bit these days due to her lung cancer treatments, and she says the pictures help to provide a little dose of happiness.

"This is what adults need. People of all ages need. I think it boosts their morale. It does mine," said Dodd.

This is the reason for Hallway of Hope. It sprang to life back in 2010.

"When I had been receiving my treatment for breast cancer, I walked up and down this hallway as part of my radiation treatment. I did so everyday for six weeks, and there was nothing on the walls at the time," said Hallway of Hope creator Tracy Lynch.

Lynch wanted to jazz up the place, so she suggested a partnership between the hospital and Henrico County Public Schools, to fill this hallway with children's art.

They received more than 700 drawings, which they have rotated each month for four years. Now, they need new pictures.

The theme is "What Makes Me Happiest."

"We hear from patients who write to us by email or catch us in the hallway when we're switching out the art, that it really makes a difference to come by and look at the art. Bring their head up, instead of looking down," said oncology clinical nurse specialist Meg Helsley.

It is a colorful distraction, and Patricia, along with other patients, want to see more of it.

"Draw us some more pictures to put on these walls because it is a joyous thing for me and for all of the other patients," said Dodd.

Henrico County Public School students are encouraged to submit pictures for the "Hallway of Hope"  to their art teachers by June 3.
