HANOVER, VA (WWBT) - An Ashland mother is accused of child neglect after a concerned citizen noticed her child sweating inside a locked car.

Megan L. Toomey, 31, was shopping at the Hanover Square shopping center on Bell Creek Road Sunday at 4 p.m. and left her 9-year-old son unattended in a locked car for around 20 minutes, according to Hanover sheriffs.

A passerby saw the child sweating inside the car and contacted sheriffs who called Hanover Fire-EMS, authorities said. Fire-EMS crews evaluated the child and determined he didn't need to be taken to the hospital, but did contact Child Protective Services.

The child was released to the custody of a family member.

Toomey faces one felony count of child neglect and is due in Hanover Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.
