Federal appeals court to hear arguments for same-sex marriage ruling in VA

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Supporters and opponents of same-sex marriage are setting their eyes on a federal appeals court in Richmond.

Two same-sex couples filed the lawsuit challenging Virginia's constitutional amendment and state laws prohibiting same-sex marriage. In February, a Norfolk federal judge struck down the state's ban on gay marriage.

A panel of three judges heard oral arguments Tuesday morning, as the federal appeals court is now taking up the issue. This is the third case to reach the arguments stage in a federal appeals court.

The court of appeals normally takes weeks or even months to rule after hearing arguments.

Ultimately, both sides expect the issue to be decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Hundreds of people lined bank street holding signs on either side of the issue.
