New Kent meth lab couple also wanted in other counties

A couple suspected of running a meth lab at a New Kent campground are being investigated in other counties for similar crimes. Jason Meade, 25, and his girlfriend Whitney Marciniak, 23, are now behind bars, but police say more charges from other jurisdictions could be coming.

New Kent County deputies, Drug Enforcement Agency agents and Virginia State Police searched Meade's home on the Woodbourne Campground Monday afternoon.

Lithium batteries, over-the-counter cough medicine and other noxious chemicals were hauled away by men wearing HAZMAT suits and masks. Nearby residents were evacuated from their trailers for fear of a fire or explosion.

However, the crime started at an abandoned property less than two miles away on Newtown Road, where New Kent County investigators received a call for a suspicious vehicle.

"Deputies responded down to that area, and in responding, they determined that a residence on Newtown Road had been broken into," said Chief Deputy Joe McLaughlin.

That's when police say they spotted Meade and Marciniak. After a foot chase, deputies arrested the couple and brought them in for questioning.

Police say they were led to Meade's camper, where they discovered a working meth lab, a room for growing marijuana, stolen property and a third suspect, Nathaniel Atkins, 23, who has been charged with heroin possession.

All three suspects are in the Henrico County jail and will be arraigned Tuesday morning.
