Jury deliberations set to begin Thursday in Alexis Murphy case

Posted: Updated:

Jurors will begin deciding Randy Taylor's fate first thing Thursday morning. The 48-year-old faces murder and abduction charges in connection with the presumed death of Alexis Murphy.

The 17-year-old has been missing since August and on Wednesday, the final pieces of evidence were presented to the jury.

Though originally slated for a two-week trial, the case went to the jury after only five days.

After hearing closing arguments, the judge asked if the jury would like to deliberate into the night or come back Thursday. The jurors decided to reconvene Thursday morning.

The five men and seven women have a lot to weigh in this case, considering Alexis Murphy's body has never been found.

On Wednesday, Taylor's prison inmate took the stand and told the jurors that Taylor confessed to being sexually interested in the teenager.

For a second time, the jury was also shown a shirt soaked with Alexis' blood and strands of her hair, both found in Taylor's camper after her disappearance.

After court recessed for the day, Alexis' friend Savanna McGarry spoke to NBC12. "Just knowing they have her hair and all that just makes it more heartbreaking," she said.

Taylor's attorneys only took an hour to defend their client, saying there isn't enough evidence to prove murder or abduction since Alexis' body still hasn't been found.

However, Alexis' family and friends aren't buying it.

"I just look at him and can't believe that he would do that to someone who was so innocent and wouldn't hurt anybody," said McGarry.

Will a jury agree? Alexis' aunt hopes so.

"It just feels like the last ten months has just come to this moment and it's just a little overwhelming at times," said Trina Murphy.

Court will begin at 9:30a.m. A jury can convict Taylor of either first or second degree murder and will have to decide if he's guilty of abduction as well.
