Henrico teacher honored for quick thinking

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

A Henrico teacher was honored Wednesday for quick thinking back in February that saved the life of a student who was choking.

Captain Daniel Rosenbaum and Community Services Firefighter Jon Reinmuth presented Moody Middle School teacher Brent O'Dea with a special commendation from the Division of Fire's Chief, Anthony E. McDowell at an after school faculty meeting today.

On February 20, at Moody Middle School, O'Dea was instructing his students in his classroom when he noticed that a 13-year-old girl in his class appeared to be in distress at her desk. O'Dea moved closer to the student and realized that she appeared to be choking. He administered the Heimlich Maneuver, which forced a piece of candy out of the girl's mouth, causing her to start breathing again.

O'Dea said he credits Moody Middle School's nurse, Marie Purcell, RN, with her annual pre-school instruction on basic First Aid skills that include how to perform abdominal thrusts during a choking incident.

Close to 3,000 people die every year from choking. Learning CPR and procedures like the Heimlich Maneuver can save lives.
