CVEC initiatives target outages, losses

Posted: Updated:

LOVINGSTON, Va. (AP) - Two initiatives are underway at the Central Virginia Electric Cooperative to reduce electricity losses and outages.

One initiative involves the creation of a computerized vegetation management system to reduce tree- and vegetation-related accidents that can cause outages. The other will identify and try to prevent losses from theft and operating the distribution system.

The Lovingston-based cooperative has created two new full-time positions to lead the initiatives.

Senior vice president Bruce Maurhoff tells The News & Advance (http://bit.ly/RkqJXH) that about half of the cooperative's outages are due to tree-related accidents.

Maurhoff says the cooperative loses about 7 percent of the wholesale electricity that it buys.

The cooperative serves about 35,000 customers in 14 counties.
