Caught on Camera: RPS student attacked at school in 'choke out game'

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

A disturbing "game" is being played at area schools. Richmond Public School leaders promise action after someone recorded a student being choked until he passed out on school property. It is called the "choke out game."

"Parents need to talk to their children," said Patricia Chawlk. "This could hurt you."

Chawlk was shocked to find video of the surprise attack on her grandson posted to Facebook. It happened inside the school cafeteria at George Wythe High school.

"When I looked at the video my heart stopped," said Chawlk.

A student comes from behind and places the unsuspecting teen in a choke hold until he appears to lose consciousness.

"And then you see him holding his arm up," recalls Chawlk. "And his body is dangling. I was angry. It hurt me. It hurt that he would have to go through that."

The teen's mother says she plans to press charges against the attacker.

"I want him expelled from school," said Chantelle Pearson. "I want charges brought against him. My son has to be known as the boy they choked out. He didn't have a way to defend himself.

Richmond Public Schools released the following extensive statement:

School administrators have investigated the details surrounding the altercation that took place between two George Wythe High School students this week. While initial accounts of the incident suggested horseplay, we have found the altercation to be the result of the national trend, the "choke-out game."  The students involved have been disciplined according to the Standards of Student Conduct and charges are pending. As an added measure, communications will be sent to parents to reiterate the appropriate behaviors we expect of our students while in school and the potential consequences of inappropriate behavior. We remain committed to ensuring that students have a safe and nurturing environment in which to learn, and will not tolerate behaviors that disrupt instruction or jeopardize the safety of our students and staff.
