Numerous streets and city offices closed for cycling race

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

The USA Cycling Collegiate National Road Championship starts Friday morning, meaning thousands of people who work and live in the area will have to backpedal a little to avoid getting caught in dozens of road closures. This is especially important for Friday.

The road closures will stretch from Shockoe Bottom to the Museum District; that includes numerous blocks where parking is prohibited. More than 50 streets will be blocked off, and tow trucks will be out in force.

"There are no stadiums in cycling so the roads really become the stadiums for us," said Lee Kallman, vice president of marketing and development for Richmond 2015.

Kallman said it's going to cause congestion and can be frustrating if you're not prepared.

"The major impact of that is the downtown area, we go out to VCU out to Monument Avenue to the Jeff Davis monument," he said.

Road closures started Thursday morning as crews blocked East Broad Street between 3rd and 7th streets to construct the finish line. The Richmond Police Department says Friday will be the most challenging for officers because more streets will be closed and officers will be out making sure spectators and bikers are safe.

Starting Friday morning, there will be two races, a time trial which will take cyclists through downtown, the Fan over the Lee Bridge. Saturday is a shorter race, but will affect the middle of downtown. Sunday is a road race that takes cyclists from Shockoe Bottom to the Museum District.

"This is going to be a great weekend, big opportunity for our city," said Kallman.

He said this weekend is just a taste of what's to come, because The River City will host the Road World Championships next year. And that's expected to bring even more people and cyclists into the city.

Because of the road closures, Richmond's Juvenile and Domestic Courthouse, the General District courts, and the City Clerk's office will be closed on Friday. The Paul and Phyllis Galanti Education Center at the Virginia War Memorial will be closed on Friday and Sunday.
