They are urgent warnings you see form our weather team on NBC12. The bars and maps on the screen are important- because flood warnings and watches alert you to very dangerous situations.

We received images of flooded roads from Henrico, Hanover, Amelia, and all over the RVA. NBC12 Weather Experts say flooded roads can be deadly and water can rise fast.

"It can happen very quickly," said Ros Runner. "Water can rise very rapidly in a heavy rain situation. Especially with some of these thunder storms like we've had today where the rainfall rates are one to two to three inches per hour."

Just a foot of water can sweep away a small car. A foot and a half of water can sweep away a large one.

" You can get a creek that comes up over its banks very quickly and that water comes up and over the roadway very quickly and you can be caught in a very very dangerous situation," said Runner.  "Think about moving water. It has a lot of force behind it. If it's able to pick up a vehicle in only a foot of water, that's a lot of power that water has.
