Ashland's Mr. Fix It upset with Angie’s List reviews

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Mr. Fix It, a home improvement contractor in business for 44 years, advertised on Angie's List and got additional business as a result. Now the business owner is frustrated about the response he got from Angie's List regarding several negative comments about his business.

"How can I continue to pay them when they in turn are not working to help me get rid of what is obviously a malicious attempt to just hurt my business?" asked Mark Binshtok, president of Mr. Fix It.

One customer's review reads that they're not satisfied with several aspects of a bathroom remodeling job Binshtok's company completed. Binshtok said the work requested by this customer wasn't in the contract that was drawn up three years ago.

"As long as it's true, even if it's bad, it should still be allowed to stay," Binshtok said. "But if it's totally false and it's a smear campaign for whatever reason, then Angie's List ought to have a responsibility to look out for a company that a consumer is trying to hurt." Binshtok said he thinks Angie's List should not be used as a forum for a vendetta.

Angie Hicks, founder of the website, said Binshtok's case is active, and the negative review must stay as the company examines the case. Hicks said reviews can't be edited or removed, and they belong to the member who wrote them.

"The manager told me I should go out and just get more Angie's List members to make more positive feedback," Binshtok said. "It would make this [review] get pushed down the line. He said that would help make it go away."

According to a recent article in a remodeling trade magazine, there is an effort to boycott Angie's List and stymie its revenue. The article claimed 60 percent of the 200 people who left comments supported the idea. In response, Hicks said, "We have very loyal service companies. There's always active dialogue. We are proud of the past 19 years.
