FedEx gunman joked he would shoot up workplace

The shooter was identified as Geddy Kramer The shooter was identified as Geddy Kramer
COBB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

The man responsible for the shooting at a FedEx warehouse in Kennesaw was found dead inside the building with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to authorities.

The shooting, which was reported at 5:54 a.m., happened at the FedEx located on Grist Lake Road in Kennesaw.

Police have identified the gunman as 19-year-old Geddy Kramer of Acworth. Police said he was a package handler for the company.

"He had a shotgun, and they say he had an ammunition belt going across his chest with a lot of shells like Rambo," said Carlos Whatley, a contracted driver for the company.

A family friend who lives next door to Kramer said recently Kramer had been acting differently.  When he saw the police in his neighborhood, he said he immediately knew why they were there.

"I remember Geddy would always joke around about shooting up his workplace," Lucas Dziedzic said. "I know he joked about it, and when I saw what happened on the news it added up it was him."

Dziedzic said he was the person who helped get Kramer a job at FedEx. Dziedzic said the two had been friends since kindergarten.

Dziedzic's girlfriend, Bryanna Cunningham, said Kramer struggled with depression.

"I know he seemed a little depressed, and I would talk to him about it. But he is not a very open person," Cunningham said. "But when I did talk about it, he would cut me off and not talk about it."

Six people were taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital. Their conditions range from minor to those in surgery.

As of Wednesday, their conditions are as follows:

  • 28-year-old man in critical condition
  • 52-year-old woman in stable condition
  • 22-year-old man in stable condition
  • 42-year-old woman treated and released (Tuesday)
  • 38-year-old man treated and released (Tuesday)
  • 19-year-old man treated and released (Wednesday)

Hundreds of officers from multiple agencies responded to the scene.

The building was evacuated while police searched for the shooter inside the facility. The shooter was found dead a while later at a loading dock in the bay area.

Cobb County police Sgt. Dana Pierce said Kramer was found with at least one shotgun and described him as "heavily armed."

Kramer's family released the following statement Tuesday afternoon:

"First and foremost, our family would like to express our deepest sympathies and condolences to the victims of this morning's tragedy and their families. Our prayers are for their complete and speedy recovery. Our thoughts are also with all the workers at FedEx who were affected by Geddy's actions. We make no excuses for his actions and are shocked and devastated by them. There really are no adequate words at a time like this. Our family would appreciate our privacy at this very difficult time. Thank you."

FedEx also released the following statement:

"We can confirm that an incident occurred early Tuesday morning at a FedEx Ground facility in Kennesaw, Georgia. Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected, and with their families and friends. We are grateful for the assistance of law enforcement. The situation is now stabilized and we are focused on the needs of our team members and cooperating with the law enforcement investigation of this tragedy."

Police searched the warehouse for any type of incendiary device the suspect could have left in the building. They told CBS46 they located several Molotov cocktail explosives, though none had detonated.

The warehouse, a delivery and sort facility, is half a million square feet.

FedEx clerk Liza Aiken told CBS46 reporter Craig Bell she saw the shooter, whom she had problems with as recently as last Thursday.

"He had bullets strapped across his chest like Rambo, a huge assault rifle and he had a knife," Aiken said in a parking lot where employees were gathering not far from their workplace. Before she could continue, a woman wearing a FedEx jacket told Aiken to stop talking and led her away.

Aiken told Bell Kramer was taking a laser package scanner and flashing it in her eyes. She reported to management and he was verbally reprimanded.

She also said Kramer didn't see her and is thankful he didn't because if he did, she is not sure what would have happened.

The facility is located next to the general aviation airport for Cobb County.

Officials said employees have to go through security but it is not as rigorous as airport security.

"They have a security guard shack there," said Nakia Williams, a driver for FedEx. "You walk through the metal detectors and they'll wand you and that's about it."

Police continued their investigation Tuesday evening and said they were talking to those who knew Kramer.

"You see it on TV but don't expect to see it at your job site," said Curtis Perry, a mechanic.
