CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

A single sprinkler head inside a Meadowbrook High School classroom went off Monday afternoon forcing students to briefly evacuate the school, according to fire officials.

Students were evacuated to the football field shortly before 1 p.m. when the alarm went off, according to fire officials. Students were back in the building by around 1:15 p.m. and were dismissed on time.

Though no fire or smoke, Chesterfield Fire Lt. Jason Elmore says two classrooms flooded along with some of the hallway.

Crews took three students to the hospital after complaining of nausea from the smell of the water. Four other students were treated for nausea at the scene.

The fire alarm went off after the sprinkler head was accidentally set off, according to school officials. The classroom with the sprinkler which accidentally went off incurred some damage, while several other classrooms had only minor water damage, school officials said.

All afternoon activities scheduled for Monday were canceled. The school will operate on the normal schedule Tuesday.
