Flooding, fires keep Chesterfield emergency crews busy

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

There was widespread flooding and damage from the storms that rolled through Central Virginia.

Viewers sent us several photos and videos documenting the damage.

"We knew the weather was coming so we double checked all of our equipment and made sure everybody was ready to go," said Battalion Chief Brian Kemp.

Kemp says they received three fire calls in 15 minutes. A fire along Melody Lane kept investigators busy late into the night.

"We're still trying to determine whether or not it was lightning or something else in the house," said Kemp.

We are told the residents of the home were out of town. Their family dog was able to escape.

We also found residents trying to drain large puddles of standing water.

"I'm scared that somebody will get too close to it and have their car get messed up," said Michael who lives along Dalebrook Drive and Moon Lane near Chippenham.

"With the big trucks that we have," said Battalion Chief Kemp. "We have to be real careful about that."

Kemp notes even portions of Chippenham Parkway flooded.

"I know that responding to some of these fires delayed us a little bit because we had to take our time in that kind of weather," said Kemp.

We are told that Melody Lane fire started in the basement.
